History of Atlantic Union Bank

The bank had founded as First Market Bank, FSB, on November 4th, 1997, in Memphis, Tennessee, as a joint experience between the Ukrop’s Food Group and National Commerce Bank corporations, later acquired by SunTrust Banks. In March 2005, the bank shifted its headquarters to Richmond.

In March 2006, SunTrust sold its 49 percent claim in the bank to Markel Corporation, a parcel and casualty insurer, for $82.6 million. On February 1st, 2010, the bank was acquired by Bowling Green-based Union Bankshares Corporation in a $105 million transaction.

2010, the Company consolidated its associates Union Bank and Trust Co., Northern Neck Bank, and The Rappahannock Bank of Washington into a bank. It changed its name to Union First Market Bank. 

In January 2014, the Company received StellarOne Corporation in a stock transaction valued at $445 million.

The bank acquired StellarOne Bank, established in 1900 as The Second National Bank of Culpeper, to create the largest community bank headquartered in Virginia. In February 2015, the bank changed its title to Union Bank & Trust.

In January 2018, the Company achieved the $701 million purchase of Xenith Bankshares, the largest Virginia banking transaction in decades. It merged Xenith Bank, formerly Bank of Hampton Roads, into the bank. 

The deal expands the bank’s footprint in Hampton Roads, Maryland, and North Carolina. In May 2019, the bank modified its name to Atlantic Bank.
